Course Information
Description This course provides a survey of economic systems, forms of business ownership, and considerations for running a business. Students will learn various aspects of business, management, and leadership functions; organizational considerations; and decision-making processes. Financial topics are introduced, including accounting, money and banking, and securities markets. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
  • Identify major business functions of accounting, finance, information systems, management, and marketing. Describe the relationships of social responsibility, ethics, and law in business.
  • Explain forms of ownership, including their advantages and disadvantages. Identify and explain the domestic and international considerations for today’s business environment: social, economic, legal, ethical, technological, competitive, and international.
  • Identify and explain the role and effect of government on business.
  • Describe the importance and effects of ethical practices in business and be able to analyze business situations to identify ethical dilemmas and ethical lapses.
  • Describe basic financial statements and show how they reflect the activity and financial condition of a business.
  • Explain the banking and financial systems, including the securities markets, business financing, and basic concepts of accounting.
  • Explain integrity, ethics, and social responsibility as they relate to leadership and management.
  • Explain the nature and functions of management. Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of information technology for businesses.

Instructor Policies

Textbook/Supplies: The student will be responsible for any assignments given. 

Students will need a standard function calculator.


Assignments: Assignments will be weekly. This is subject to change.  


Quizzes: Quizzes will often cover the key terms/vocabulary/concepts contained in the chapter.  


Exams:  The use of your notes and book IS permitted; however, cheating on exams is not acceptable and will be subject to violations of the Academic Dishonesty policy. 


Late Work:  All assignments, quizzes,  and exams must be completed and submitted on the due date or risk a deduction of points.


Grades: Assignments, quizzes, and exams will be graded by the next class.


Academic Dishonesty: Copying, stealing, and/or submitting someone else's work is considered a violation of the Academic Dishonesty policy. Academic Dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated. A student violating this policy will receive a ZERO on any assignment (first offense); a second incidence of academic dishonesty will result in failure of the class and meeting with program coordinator and/or department chair.


Classroom Etiquette: We will respect each other and their personal space. Always be considerate and treat others how you would like to be treated.


Attendance Policy Attendance is worth up to 140 points - earn 10 points for each class attended.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
